The call comes on the back of the launch of the IMIs government backed Professional Register, allowing users to search for qualified technicians through a free online service. The register lists those in the automotive industry who are members of the IMI, or who have been accredited by the ATA.

Steve Nash, the IMI's CEO said: "Many drivers will be unaware that the motor industry is unregulated. Just because someone is employed in a workshop, does not necessarily mean that they have the skills and expertise to carry out maintenance and repairs correctly, or safely."

The call for drivers to check for qualifications comes due to the lack of regulation in the industry, meaning anyone can set up a workshop, even without qualifications. This can lead to repeat visits for vehicles to be repaired, which can dent trust in the industry.

The IMI's searchable Professional Register currently lists 40,000 qualified and competent individuals with around 30,000 in technical roles.
