Do you have the right tool?
Published:  04 March, 2014

If you have your bearings, you will know all about Generation 1 type single row ball and tapered roller bearings, oh and there's the double row ball too, you also have the double row tapered roller bearings known as Gen 1T and let's not forget hub units! The Gen 2 bearing from Schaeffler's FAG programme is used as original equipment in models made by Ford, Land Rover, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Smart, Volkswagen, the Audi Group and Volvo. Its simple construction combines a pre-assembled hub flange combined with a Gen 1 bearing but most applications require an encoder seal which sends a signal to the ECU to activate systems such as ABS, traction control and ESP. It is possible to damage them during fitment so specially designed tools are available to prevent this from happening. The two-piece collar comes in a range of sizes and sits in the space between the rear of the hub flange and the retaining ring - all of the force applied is then evenly distributed through the outer race. Tool kits specifically for Gen 2 bearings are available from Hazet, Klann and Sykes Pickavant.
